Etymology

Unknown. Perhaps a denominative verb from Proto-Italic *ser(w)-iom, a noun also possibly attested in Umbrian 𐌀𐌍𐌆𐌄𐌓𐌉𐌀𐌕𐌖 (anzeriatu), which may derive from *an-ser(w)-iom. Alternatively, it may derive from *serw-jō, a verb that may also be the source of Latin serviō and Umbrian 𐌑𐌄𐌓𐌉𐌕𐌖 (seritu). The term may also be prefixed with *op-, a prefix attested in Umbrian ooserclome, itself possibly from *op-seri-tlo-m. The term is related to Latin servus, from *serwos, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ser-.
