From (Biblical Hebrew, hapax legomenon) מִסְתּוֹר (mistór, hiding place) +‎ ־ִי (í).

False cognate of English mystery, although possibly shaped by influence from μυστήριον (mustḗrion); see מִסְטוֹרִין and מִסְתּוֹרִין.
