Etymology
From an older form *ܐܲܗܠܵܐ (*ˀahlā) with a shift from the an /ʔ/ to /j/, from Aramaic אׇהֲלָא (ʾāhălā), from Proto-Semitic *ʔahl- (“tent camp”); compare Arabic أَهْل (ʔahl, “kinfolk”), Hebrew אֹהֶל (óhel, “tent”) and Akkadian 𒌷 (ālum, “city, town”).
