Borrowed from Classical Persian پنجاب (panj-āb, [Land of] the Five Rivers), from پنج (panj, five) and آب (āb, water), referring to five rivers of the Punjab region: the Jhelum, the Chenab, the Ravi, the Sutlej and the Beas.
