From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m-dwaŋ (“peacock”); cognate with Tibetan མདོངས (mdongs, “eye in a peacock's feathers”) (STEDT). STEDT also adduces Old Chinese 孔 (OC *kʰloːŋʔ, “peacock”) as a cognate, though the initial in the Chinese form is problematic and better matches Austroasiatic forms; perhaps the word is areal across Southeast Asia.
