From ọ̀pẹ̀ (“palm tree, Elaeis guineensis”) + ilẹ̀ (“ground”), literally “Palm tree of the ground”
- The tree Elaeis guineensis is sacred to the worship of Ifá and the nuts of the ọ̀pẹ̀ tree are used to form the ọ̀pẹ̀lẹ̀.
