Etymology

Compound of 先 (saki, “tip, end”) +‎ 割れ (ware, “splitting, cleaving”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of intransitive verb 割れる (wareru, “to split, to cleave”)) +‎ スプーン (supūn, “spoon”).^[1]^[2]^[3]

Apparently coined to refer to the utensil provided as part of school food service.^[1] First appearance unknown, but some time after 1860, the first attestation for スプーン (supūn).^[4]
