From 가슴 (gaseum, “breast”) + 뼈 (ppyeo, “bone”).
First attested in the Magyeong chojip eonhae (馬經抄集諺解 / 마경초집언해), 16th century, as Early Modern Korean 가ᄉᆞᆷᄲᅧ (Yale: kasom.spye).
