First attested as Early Modern Korean 설거지 (selkeci) in the Gukhan hoeeo (國韓會語 / 국한회어), 1896. Equivalent to Middle Korean 설엊- (selGec-, “to clear up”) + -이 (-i, nominalizer), modern 서릊- (seoreut-) + -이 (-i).
