Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Italic *ad-kΚ·e or Proto-Italic *at-kΚ·e, related to Proto-Italic *ati, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *hβ‚‚Γ©ti. Possibly cognate with Latin atque and Latin at, although De Vaan considers this uncertain due to the different meanings of the term.
