Klippschule
German
Etymology
17th century, from Middle Low German klipschôle (16th c.), probably from klippe (“clog, wooden shoe”) + schôle (“school”). By surface analysis, klipp (“click, clap”, interjection) + Schule. The original meaning may have been simply “village school, working-class school” (where the children wore clogs), but already the earliest attestation has the modern, restricted sense.
