Løkken Verk

Norwegian Nynorsk

Etymology

The first part Løkken is, by surface analysis, from løkke/lykkje - a fenced farming area, usually for livestock. The second part is verk - a production place, usually a mine. The en-ending is from Danish.

The name is probably derived from Gottes Glück - the first mine in the area. In this case, the name is calque of German Glück (Trøndersk dialect løkke, Norwegian Nynorsk lukke).

In Danish and Swedish texts from before the 20th century attested as Lyckens Værk, Løkkens Værk, Løckens Værk etc.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /løkːən.ʋɛrk/
  • IPA(key): /løkːən.ʋæʂk/ (Trøndelag)

Proper noun

Løkken Verk n

  1. a town in Orkland municipality, Trøndelag, Norway. The town was a big copper mining place in 1654-1853 and 1891-1974. A pilgrim path is going through the town from the Dovre mountains down to the Nidaros cathedral.

Usage notes

Often is shortened into Løkken. Surrounding villages (such as Bjørnli, Midtskogen, Svinsøy and now abandoned Merkeshaugen) are usually considered as parts of this town, but the term Løkken is often referring to the centrum of the town (former Vavold farm, whence also Vavoldlia).
