Finnish
Etymology
Named after the lake Lohja, which may derive from a contraction of *Lohijärvi (lohi + järvi) > *Lohjää > Lohja, or from dialectal lohja, lohjake, lohjakka (“slow, incapable; large, bulky, stiff”) through bynames/nicknames.[1] Alternatively, it may have first referred to a waterway into which Lake Lohja flows, and might be from a contraction equivalent to lohi + oja, but through Estonian.[2]
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈlohjɑ/, [ˈlo̞xjɑ̝]
- Rhymes: -ohjɑ
- Syllabification(key): Loh‧ja
- Hyphenation(key): Loh‧ja
