Etymology 1
16th century, from rauch, an obsolete byform of rau (“rough, coarse”, here “hairy”), + Werk (“work, product, implement”). The corresponding Middle High German rūchwerc is already attested, but with the sense “furrier’s trade”, which had no continuation.
