Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kV-ni-s.

Numeral

Proto-Bodish numbers (edit)
 ←  1 2 3  →
    Cardinal: *(g)nis

*(g)nis

  1. two

Reconstruction notes

  • Only Tibetic preserves this numeral as expected. No Proto-Bodish form is given by Bodt, but given the cognates outside Bodish, this numeral must have existed in Proto-Bodish times.
  • Dakpa-Dzala replaced the vowel in this word with a ~ o for unknown reasons. Bodt reconstructs their proto-form as *nos.[1]
  • Bumthangic uses an unrelated word zon for "two" of uncertain origin.

Descendants
