Proto-Bodish

Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *tek (to drip).

Verb

*tʰik

  1. to drip

Noun

*tʰik (pa)

  1. drop of liquid

Reconstruction notes

The non-Tibetic languages fail to show the expected change from *i to *e. Bodt suspects that this word was perceived as an onomatopoeia by Bodish speakers, causing it to resist the expected sound change.[1]

Descendants

  • Tibetic
    • Tibetan: འཐིག ('thig), ཐིག་པ (thig pa)
  • Dakpa-Dzala
  • East Bodish
