Etymology
Assigning a direct etymology is difficult. Jacques, Michaud and Li compare this to Burmese မှို (hmui), Tibetan མོག་ཤ (mog sha) and Japhug tɤjmɤɣ. These comparisons are beset with various phonological problems, like how Naish and Lolo-Burmese have no final dorsal consonant final, but the Tibetan and Japhug (from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *lmuk (“hat”)) do. There is no regular correspondence that allows for a dorsal final to disappear in Lolo-Burmese but not in Tibetan and rGyalrongic.
