Proto-Slavic

Alternative forms

  • *uz

Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *uź, cognate with Lithuanian , Latvian uz, of disputed further origin. Derksen tries to derive from a proto-form *ups, but fails to see how it could account for the Baltic facts.[1] Snoj considers relation to Proto-Indo-European *úd(s) (out), which otherwise yields Proto-Slavic *vy-.[2] Compare Proto-Germanic *uz.

    Preposition

    *vъz[1][2][3]

    1. (+accusative) instead of, in return for
    2. (+accusative) up, above
    3. (+accusative) by, beside

    Usage notes

Used also as a prefix *vъz-.
