One ton of TNT is 4.184 gigajoules (1 gigacalorie). A 1-kiloton bomb is comparable in effect to a thousand metric tons of TNT. A 50-megaton bomb is comparable in effect to fifty million metric tons of TNT. (This is about the size of the largest bomb detonated so far.) A 1-gigaton bomb would be comparable in effect to a billion metric tons of TNT. (No such bomb yet exists.)

TNT equivalent (plural TNT equivalents)

The amount of energy released by an explosion expressed in terms of the amount of TNT (trinitrotoluene) needed to generate a similar explosion. Used especially to describe nuclear bombs.
