Usage notes
- The spelling Westberlin with no hyphen was particularly common in East German usage, where East Berlin was simply called Berlin or, as its full title: Berlin, Hauptstadt der DDR (“Berlin, capital of the GDR”). Berlin (West), on the other hand, was chiefly used in West Germany, corresponding to Berlin (Ost) for East Berlin.
