First attested as suluelda in 838. Etymology uncertain. Compound composed of an unclear first element that might either be Old Dutch sele (“hall home”) or a term related to Old English syle (“pool, bog”), German Suhle (“mire, wallow”) and Old Dutch uelda (“field”). Compare Silvolde.
