1. to put oneself in someone's place, to put oneself in someone's shoes

   Suomalaiset ovat lähes maailman huonoimpia asettumaan toisen ihmisen asemaan.

   Finns are almost the worst in the world at putting themselves in another person's shoes.

The person emphasized with (or not) is either indicated through a possessive suffix added to asemaan (see the table below) or expressed in the genitive case before asemaan.

• Hän ei pysty asettumaan minun asemaan. / Hän ei pysty asettumaan asemaani.

  She can't put herself in my shoes.
